More Than 20 Pilsen Art Spaces Are Opening Their Doors This Weekend. Here’s Where to Go

PILSEN— This weekend, you do not have to admire Pilsen’s art from the sidewalk.

You can step inside the places where much of it is actually made.

Pilsen Open Studios returns Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25, opening artist studios, galleries and cultural spaces across the neighborhood from noon to 6 p.m. both days. Choose Chicago says more than 20 galleries and cultural venues are participating, while the organizers describe a broader network of working studios and creative spaces spread throughout Pilsen.
There are also free guided mural tours at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, giving visitors an easy way to understand the neighborhood’s public art before heading inside the studios. Registration is required for the tours.

The best way to experience the weekend is not to rush through every location.

Pick a section of Pilsen, walk between a few studios, stop for food or coffee, and pay attention to the murals, storefronts, homes and community spaces connecting everything together.

What Is Pilsen Open Studios?

This event has been part of the neighborhood’s creative calendar since 2003, when a group of longtime Pilsen artists created an opportunity for the public to see something galleries do not always show: the actual places where artists work.

The focus remains on studios as places of production. Participating artists either live or work in Pilsen or have a strong historical connection to the neighborhood. Cultural spaces and cafes can also participate by exhibiting work from Pilsen-connected artists who do not maintain their own neighborhood studio.

That makes the weekend different from a traditional gallery crawl.

Visitors may encounter paintings, printmaking, photography, sculpture, mixed media and works still in progress, while also having the chance to speak directly with artists about what they are making.

Pilsen Arts & Community House, or PACH, now serves as steward of the event and provides an interactive map of participating spaces for visitors to follow on their phones. Printed information can also be picked up at PACH at 1637 W. 18th Street.

Start at Pilsen Arts & Community House

If you have never attended before, Pilsen Arts & Community House at 1637 W. 18th Street is the easiest place to begin.

PACH is the event organizer and neighborhood hub, so you can use it to orient yourself before deciding which direction to walk. Open Studios runs noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, while a kickoff celebration is also happening Friday, October 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. with art, music, food and dancing.

Rather than planning a rigid itinerary before arriving, open the official interactive map and choose several locations clustered together.

That is particularly useful in Pilsen because the neighborhood’s art scene is not contained inside one museum district. Studios, community organizations, murals, cafes and businesses are scattered through the residential and commercial streets.

The walk between them is part of the experience.

Make Time for Héctor Duarte’s Studio and Pilsen’s Murals

One artist highlighted on the official 2026 Open Studios page is Héctor Duarte, whose home and studio at 1900 W. Cullerton Street is itself one of Pilsen’s recognizable works of public art.

The building is wrapped by Duarte’s Gulliver in Wonderland mural, making it an easy example of how the line between studio and public artwork can disappear in Pilsen.

But you do not need to know every mural before visiting.

Pilsen Public Art Tours is offering free 90-minute Pilsen Open Studios mural tours at 11 a.m. on both October 24 and 25. Reservations are required.

Starting with the tour actually makes sense: it ends around 12:30 p.m., just after the studios open at noon, so you can move directly from learning about the art on neighborhood walls to meeting artists inside their working spaces.

Pilsen’s public art is not simply decoration. Murals throughout the neighborhood reflect Mexican and Mexican American identity, immigration, labor, community history and political and social movements, which is part of why walking between studios adds context that a single gallery visit cannot provide.

Know Before You Go

Pilsen Open Studios runs Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25 from noon to 6 p.m. Participating artist studios, galleries and cultural spaces are spread throughout Pilsen, so use the official Open Studios map rather than expecting everything to be concentrated in one building.

Free mural tours begin at 11 a.m. both days and require advance registration through Pilsen Public Art Tours.

Wear comfortable shoes and give yourself more time than you think you need.

This is one Chicago event where getting distracted by the neighborhood is part of the plan.
