Evanston’s Lakefront Mansion Is Hosting a Three-Day Fall Festival. Here’s Why It’s Worth Visiting

EVANSTON: —A historic mansion, Lake Michigan views, live music and three days of fall activities are coming together on one of Evanston’s most distinctive stretches of lakefront this weekend.

ClarkeToberfest runs Friday, October 16 through Sunday, October 18 at the Harley Clarke Mansion, 2603 Sheridan Road, with live music, dancing, food, beer and family programming spread across the weekend. General admission is free, although some activities, food and drinks cost extra.

The festival alone is worth a visit. But for someone considering a move to the North Shore, the setting may be even more interesting.

Harley Clarke sits beside Lighthouse Beach and the historic Grosse Point Lighthouse, only a few blocks north of Northwestern University. Spend a few hours around the festival and you get something close to a neighborhood test drive: lakefront parks, residential streets, bike infrastructure, historic architecture and access to both Downtown Evanston and Chicago transit.

What’s Happening at ClarkeToberfest This Weekend

Each day has a slightly different personality.

Friday, October 16, from 5 to 10 p.m. focuses on live music and swing dancing. A beginner swing lesson begins at 6 p.m., followed by live music and social dancing at 7. Listening to the music is free, while dancing costs $15, or $20 with one drink included.

Saturday, October 17, from 3 to 10 p.m. shifts toward Oktoberfest-style festivities, including German live music, beer, outdoor games and a stein-holding competition from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Beer flights and souvenir steins will also be available.

Then Sunday, October 18, from noon to 8 p.m. becomes Family Day. Activities include pumpkin painting, face painting and balloon making, with Evanston children’s performer Jeanie B playing from 1 to 2:30 p.m. A Bears watch party and more live music follow later in the day.

Food will also be available from Hatchet Burger throughout the weekend.

That gives visitors plenty of flexibility. Friday works as a date-night stop, Saturday is the more traditional fall-festival experience, and Sunday is the obvious choice for families.

The Setting May Be the Best Part

Harley Clarke is not simply an event venue.

The English Tudor mansion was built in 1927 and later served as the national headquarters of Sigma Chi before the City of Evanston purchased the property in 1965. For decades it housed the Evanston Art Center. The property is an Evanston Landmark, contributes to the Northeast Evanston National Register Historic District and sits beside the nationally recognized Grosse Point Lighthouse.

Then there is the lake.

The mansion sits directly beside Lighthouse Beach, part of an Evanston shoreline that includes six swimming beaches along with scenic paths, park space and Lake Michigan views. The city's lakefront is not concentrated in one large park. Instead, public spaces and beaches appear repeatedly along the shoreline.

That is one of the lifestyle differences people notice when comparing Evanston with Chicago neighborhoods farther south.

You can live in a dense, transit-connected suburb with restaurants and businesses nearby while still being only a few minutes from a beach or lakefront path.

Evanston residents in ZIP codes 60201 and 60202 also receive free seasonal beach passes, another small detail that matters more when you actually live here than when you visit for an afternoon.

What North Shore Buyers Can Learn From a Weekend Here

A festival cannot tell you whether Evanston is the right place to buy a home.

But it can show you things a listing rarely captures.

For families, notice how people use the parks and public spaces. For someone relocating from Chicago, pay attention to whether the combination of lakefront access, walkability and a quieter residential environment feels like enough of a lifestyle change without feeling disconnected from the city.

And for buyers comparing Evanston neighborhoods, location within the suburb matters.

A home near the lake can offer a completely different daily experience from one closer to a Metra station or a commercial district. The tradeoff might involve price, property type, commute, lot size, parking or how frequently you can walk to everyday destinations.

Housing itself is varied too. Evanston has everything from historic single-family homes and townhouses to vintage condos and newer multifamily buildings.

That is why spending an afternoon here before beginning a serious home search can be surprisingly useful.

Instead of asking only, “Do I like Evanston?”

You can start asking the more practical question:

Which version of Evanston fits the way I actually want to live?
