Lollapalooza 2026 Street Closures: What Chicago Drivers and Commuters Need to Know
Lollapalooza 2026 has arrived in Grant Park, bringing four days of music along with major street closures, bus reroutes, heavier downtown traffic, and temporary access changes around the lakefront.
The festival runs from Thursday, July 30 through Sunday, August 2, with entrances open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Some closures began weeks before the festival and will remain in place through August 9 while crews dismantle the event site.
Full Lollapalooza 2026 Street Closure Schedule
Drivers traveling through Downtown Chicago, the Loop, South Loop, or areas near Grant Park should expect delays and use alternate routes when possible.
The following closures are currently in effect:
Balbo Drive from Columbus Drive to DuSable Lake Shore Drive: July 15 through August 9
Jackson Drive from Columbus Drive to DuSable Lake Shore Drive: July 21 through August 8
Balbo Drive from Michigan Avenue to Columbus Drive: July 27 through August 3
Jackson Drive from Michigan Avenue to Columbus Drive: July 27 through August 3
Columbus Drive from Monroe Street to Roosevelt Road: July 27 through August 3
Northbound center lanes of Columbus Drive from 13th Street to Roosevelt Road: July 27 through August 3
Congress Plaza Drive from Michigan Avenue to Columbus Drive: July 27 through August 3
Monroe Street from Michigan Avenue to DuSable Lake Shore Drive: July 27 through August 3
Several nearby sidewalks are also closed or restricted during festival construction and removal. The longest closures affect parts of Balbo Drive, Jackson Drive, Columbus Drive, Monroe Street, and the sidewalks near DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
Michigan Avenue Will Close Nightly
CTA riders and drivers should also prepare for a temporary nightly closure of Michigan Avenue between Roosevelt Road and Wacker Drive.
The closure is scheduled from 9 to 11 p.m. each night from July 30 through August 2, when thousands of attendees are expected to leave Grant Park. Numerous bus routes that normally operate along Michigan Avenue will temporarily move to nearby streets or end before their regular downtown terminals.
Routes affected by the phased closures include portions of the #2 Hyde Park Express, #6 Jackson Park Express, #7 Harrison, #10 Obama Presidential Center/Museum of Science and Industry, #12 Roosevelt, J14 Jeffery Jump, #26 South Shore Express, #28 Stony Island, #126 Jackson, #143 Stockton/Michigan Express, and #147 Outer DuSable Lake Shore Express.

The Best Way to Reach Grant Park
City and transit officials are strongly encouraging visitors to use CTA, Metra, or Pace rather than driving into the festival area.
CTA riders can use the Red Line, Blue Line, and elevated Loop lines. Useful stations within walking distance of Grant Park include:
Red Line: Monroe, Jackson, Harrison, and Roosevelt
Blue Line: Monroe, Jackson, and LaSalle
Loop elevated service: Washington/Wabash, Adams/Wabash, and Harold Washington Library-State/Van Buren
Roosevelt: Red, Orange, and Green lines
The main festival entrance is located at Michigan Avenue and Ida B. Wells Drive, while the north entrance is at Monroe Street and Columbus Drive.
CTA and Metra are adding service and capacity during the festival. Yellow Line service will run until 1 a.m. each night, while Metra is adding trains and railcars on multiple routes between July 30 and August 2.
“Public transportation has been the most affordable and convenient way to travel to Lollapalooza,” Metra Executive Director and CEO Jim Derwinski said.
What Residents and Commuters Should Expect
People who are not attending Lollapalooza should still allow extra travel time, particularly during the afternoon rush and after 9 p.m.
Traffic is likely to be heaviest around Michigan Avenue, Roosevelt Road, Columbus Drive, the Museum Campus, DuSable Lake Shore Drive, and streets connecting the South Loop with the Loop. Rideshare passengers leaving the festival are being directed to walk west of State Street before requesting a pickup.
Residents near Grant Park should also note that the Grant Bark Park remains closed through August 8, while the tennis and pickleball courts are scheduled to reopen at 6 a.m. on August 4.
Schedules, closures, and transit reroutes may change based on crowds, weather, and public safety needs. Check official city and transit updates before traveling downtown.
