SOUTH LOOP, CHICAGO— Looking for a new date-night spot in the South Loop? A longtime neighborhood bar has returned with a fresh look, a martini-focused cocktail menu and a familiar connection to the community.

Martini Lounge at 1520 S. Wabash Avenue reopened in September 2026, transforming the former M Lounge into an intimate cocktail destination with plush seating, low lighting and a mix of classic and modern martinis.

The reopening is part of a growing collection of restaurants and bars in the South Loop, giving residents another option for an evening out without heading to River North or West Loop.

A Familiar South Loop Bar Gets a New Look

For approximately 20 years, the space operated as M Lounge, a neighborhood gathering place known for music, cocktails and a loyal local following.

Former Chicago Bears defensive end Israel Idonije acquired the bar from longtime operators Reginald and MaryAnn Marsh in 2025, adding it to his Pangea Restaurant Group.

The redesigned space combines the history of M Lounge with a more contemporary atmosphere.

Inside, visitors will find approximately 100 softly illuminated circular ceiling fixtures, plush green seating, zebra-print accents and a low-lit interior designed for evening conversations.

Some familiar details remain, including a portrait of jazz musician Miles Davis that longtime M Lounge patrons may recognize.

The new owners have also welcomed back some of the original lounge's DJs for Friday-night programming, preserving a connection to the venue's musical history.

What's on the Martini Lounge Cocktail Menu?

The drinks are the main attraction.

Martini Lounge offers a focused selection of 12 martinis, divided into two categories: Classic Martinis and Disco Martinis.

The classic selection emphasizes traditional cocktail styles, while the disco menu features recognizable favorites with a more playful approach.

Drinks highlighted in the opening coverage include:

  • Espresso Martini: A coffee-forward cocktail for an after-dinner drink.

  • Lemon Drop: A citrus-focused martini-style cocktail.

  • Cosmopolitan: A familiar favorite combining vodka and tart fruit flavors.

  • Porn Star Martini: A tropical-inspired cocktail featuring passion fruit.

  • Classic cocktails: Additional selections include daiquiris and other traditional mixed drinks.

The beverage program is overseen by Luke DeYoung, who previously worked with South Loop establishments Oliver's and Buttercup.

One important detail for visitors: Martini Lounge does not have a full kitchen.

The food selection is limited to bar snacks such as chips and dip, olives and nuts.

For a complete date night, it's worth planning dinner at one of the neighborhood's nearby restaurants before stopping by for cocktails.

Visitors can review the official Martini Lounge menu for current drinks and pricing.

Where to Have Dinner Before Martini Lounge

Part of the appeal of Martini Lounge is its location along South Wabash Avenue, close to several established neighborhood restaurants.

Here are three nearby options for different kinds of evenings.

Oliver's | 1639 S. Wabash Avenue

For a romantic dinner, Oliver's offers a 1930s Hollywood-inspired dining room with velvet seating, vintage artwork and contemporary American cuisine.

The menu includes steaks, seafood and other upscale dinner options. Its location on Wabash makes it a convenient choice before heading to Martini Lounge.

Buttercup | 75 E. 16th Street

Another Pangea Restaurant Group concept, Buttercup combines an Italian-inspired café with an evening amaro bar.

Its menu features lighter dishes, including truffle pizzetta and charcuterie, alongside creative cocktails. It's a good choice for a relaxed start to the evening.

Flo & Santos | 1310 S. Wabash Avenue

For a more casual dinner, Flo & Santos serves Chicago tavern-style pizza alongside Polish and Italian favorites.

Visitors can enjoy pierogies, pizza and other comfort foods before continuing south along Wabash Avenue for cocktails.

Together, these restaurants make it easy to create a South Loop date night around dinner and a late-night lounge experience.

Why This Matters for South Loop's Neighborhood Lifestyle

South Loop has long offered convenient access to Downtown Chicago, Museum Campus, Grant Park and the lakefront.

Its residential streets, condominium towers and neighborhood businesses also support an active community beyond the area's major attractions.

The reopening of Martini Lounge adds another late-night gathering place to a neighborhood where residents can increasingly find restaurants, cafés and entertainment close to home.

For people considering a move to South Loop, that convenience can be part of the appeal.

Living near Wabash Avenue and the surrounding residential corridors can provide access to dining, transit, grocery stores, parks and cultural destinations.

However, buyers should also consider the practical differences between buildings and locations, including HOA fees, parking, building amenities and proximity to busy commercial streets.

Martini Lounge's return is a small but meaningful example of how established neighborhood spaces are finding new life as the South Loop's dining scene continues to evolve.
