The final weekend of August is packed with ways to squeeze more out of summer, from three major food and music festivals downtown and on the North Side to a 150th anniversary celebration at Wrigley Field.
DuPage County has its own strong lineup, including free Shakespeare in Wheaton, a Chicago football exhibit opening in Elmhurst, outdoor music at Cantigny and a Sunday food festival.

1. Chicago House Music Festival & Conference

Chicago celebrates a genre it gave to the world with several days of free house music, dance and cultural programming spread across downtown.
Friday includes a SummerDance house workshop and DJ sets in Grant Park. The biggest program takes over Millennium Park on Saturday from 1 to 9 p.m., with DJs performing across multiple stages, including Roy Davis Jr., Maurice Joshua, DJ Heather, K'Alexi Shelby, Chip E. and e smoove.
The weekend winds down Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. along the west end of the Chicago Riverwalk, where DJs will play near the confluence of the river's branches.
2. Panda Fest Chicago

Friday, August 28 through Sunday, August 30 | Butler Field, 445 E. Monroe St.
One of the biggest new events of the weekend is also making its Chicago debut.
Panda Fest takes over Butler Field with more than 100 Asian food vendors, 200-plus food offerings, merchandise vendors, cultural performances and panda-themed attractions, including a massive inflatable panda.
Hours are:

Saturday: 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
Sunday: 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
General admission is listed at $14, with Saturday tickets priced slightly higher. Children under 6 can enter free.
Expect food representing cuisines from China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and beyond, along with Chicago-area vendors and Asian cultural performances.
3. Taste of Greektown

The 36th annual Taste of Greektown returns to Halsted Street with one of the weekend's strongest food lineups.
Neighborhood restaurants including 9 Muses Bar & Grill, Athena Restaurant, Ithaki Estiatorio, Mr. Greek Gyros, Spectrum Bar & Grill and Zeus Restaurant are participating, with Greek favorites ranging from gyros and lamb to spanakopita, souvlaki and pastries.
Festival hours are 4-10 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Along with food, expect Greek music, dancing, shopping and family activities. Admission is free with a suggested donation supporting the Greektown Chamber of Commerce.
4. Edgewater Music Fest

If live music is the priority, head north.
Edgewater Music Fest brings 35-plus bands and more than 100 vendors to Broadway for three days. This year's lineup includes Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, NNAMDÏ, Maps & Atlases, Mucca Pazza, Spitalfield, LowDown Brass Band, Girl K, Neptune's Core and North by North.
Hours are 5-10 p.m. Friday and noon-10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The mix of original Chicago bands, food, local drinks, neighborhood vendors and family activities makes this one of the more locally focused festivals on the calendar.
5. Bucktown Arts Fest

Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30 | 11 a.m.-7 p.m. | Holstein Park | Free
Bucktown's long-running community art festival returns to Senior Citizens Memorial Park at Holstein Park, filling the neighborhood with original work from juried artists.
The festival can accommodate up to 190 artists, with media including painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, glass, textiles, jewelry, prints, wood and metalwork.
Admission is completely free, with no required gate donation.
The event is also unusual because it remains volunteer-run, with proceeds helping fund arts education at Holstein Park and in surrounding schools.
6. Cubs 150th Anniversary Celebration

The Cubs are celebrating 150 years as a National League franchise, and Saturday will bring several special additions to Wrigleyville.
The biggest permanent change will be the dedication of the new Founders' Clock at Clark and Addison, a four-sided landmark featuring historic Cubs logos and inscriptions representing four eras of team history.
The Cubs will also recognize their fan-selected 150th Anniversary Team, consisting of 40 players and three managers, with more than 20 members expected to participate in the celebration.
It's a particularly good weekend to explore Gallagher Way, Champions Gate and the area around Wrigley Field, even for fans interested as much in Cubs history as the game itself.
7. Shakespeare in the Park: Romeo and Juliet

DuPage County gets a free outdoor theater option this weekend as Wheaton College's Arena Theater and the Wheaton Park District present Romeo and Juliet at Memorial Park.
The park opens at 5:30 p.m., followed by a 6:45 p.m. puppet show and the main performance at 7 p.m.
The production uses full costumes, lighting and sound, but admission remains free, making it one of the strongest no-cost evening options in DuPage this weekend.
The park district notes that the play includes scenes involving violence, death and suicide, so families should consider the content before bringing younger children.
8. Bear Down Exhibit Opening + The Blooze Brothers

Friday is essentially a Chicago sports history double-header in Elmhurst.

Then at 7 p.m., the museum's outdoor bandshell hosts The Blooze Brothers, a Blues Brothers tribute band, as part of the free Fourth Fridays Summer Concert Series. The concert runs until 8:30 p.m.

9. Vital Signs at Cantigny

Cantigny's Sounds of Summer Concert Series closes out August with Vital Signs performing outdoors at Tank Park near the First Division Museum.
The group plays a mix of classic and current rock, with a set designed more around familiar songs and dancing than a quiet lawn concert.
The concert runs from 7 to 9 p.m., and visitors can also grab food or drinks from Cantigny's café and beer garden before or during the show.

10. Street Eats & Beats

For a more relaxed Sunday, Street Eats & Beats returns for its second year in Elmhurst.
The free community festival includes live bands, an emcee, dance performances and instruction, food trucks and a children's activity zone. Organizers say the inaugural event drew more than 1,000 attendees.
The event runs from 2 to 6 p.m., giving families an easy afternoon option without committing to an all-day festival.
