10 Best Things to Do in Chicago and DuPage This Weekend: October 16-18, 2026
CHICAGO:—This may be one of the busiest fall weekends of October!
Open House Chicago is unlocking more than 200 spaces across the city, the Chicago International Film Festival is underway, State Street is closing for a new downtown arts festival, and Halloween events are beginning to take over the calendar.
Head west into DuPage County, and the weekend brings everything from an after-dark fall event in Wheaton to a season-opening symphony concert and a soup-and-chili crawl through Downtown Naperville.
Here are 10 of the best things to do in Chicago and DuPage County from Friday, October 16 through Sunday, October 18, 2026.
1. Open House Chicago 2026
When: Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 17-18
Where: 200+ locations across Chicago
Admission: Free
This is the weekend's biggest citywide event. The Chicago Architecture Center's annual festival opens more than 200 architecturally, historically and culturally significant spaces, including buildings that typically are not open to the public.
Instead of racing across Chicago trying to collect as many sites as possible, choose one neighborhood and explore it on foot. Downtown, the Near West Side and Near South Side all have enough participating buildings to turn the event into a neighborhood day rather than just an architecture tour.
If you're considering moving somewhere new, Open House Chicago can also be an unusually good way to experience the streets, transit, architecture and community spaces around the homes you see online.
2. Loop Arts Fest
When: Saturday, Oct. 17, noon-6 p.m.
Where: State Street from Jackson Boulevard to Madison Street
Admission: Free
State Street is going car-free for the inaugural Loop Arts Fest, with three blocks of performances, artists, vendors and cultural programming.
Two stages will feature groups including the Joffrey Ballet, Ballet Chicago, DePaul University performers, South Asia Institute and Chicago Multicultural Dance Center, with Chicago soul singer Simone Green closing the main stage at 5 p.m.
There are also off-site activities throughout Downtown, including special programs at the Art Institute, American Writers Museum and Harold Washington Library. Because it overlaps with Open House Chicago, Saturday could be a particularly good day to spend entirely Downtown.
3. 62nd Chicago International Film Festival
When: Friday through Sunday as part of the Oct. 14-25 festival
Where: Multiple Chicago venues
Admission: Ticket prices vary by screening and event
Chicago's biggest film weekend of the fall is underway.
The 62nd Chicago International Film Festival runs through Oct. 25 with more than 150 films from around the world, alongside premieres, filmmaker appearances, discussions and special events.
Instead of treating this like a traditional trip to the movies, browse the weekend schedule for something you are unlikely to catch in a normal theater. International features, documentaries, shorts and filmmaker events are some of the best reasons to go.
4. Spooky Zoo at Lincoln Park Zoo
When: Saturday, Oct. 17, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Where: Lincoln Park Zoo, 2001 N. Clark St.
Admission: Free
For families, this is one of the easiest Halloween picks of the weekend.
Spooky Zoo includes free trick-or-treating, a scavenger hunt, kid-friendly entertainment, animal learning activities and free carousel rides. Costumes are encouraged.
It also takes place during Lincoln Park Zoo's ongoing Fall Fest, so families can stay after the Halloween activities for pumpkins, rides, fall treats and animal enrichment. The zoo itself remains free, although some Fall Fest attractions require separate tickets.
5. Dallas Stars vs. Chicago Blackhawks
When: Saturday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m.
Where: United Center, 1901 W. Madison St.
Admission: Ticketed
Hockey season is back at the United Center, and the Blackhawks continue their October homestand Saturday night against the Dallas Stars.
Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m., making this an easy evening option after spending the afternoon at Open House Chicago or exploring the West Loop.
The United Center is also in the middle of one of Chicago's most rapidly changing areas, so anyone arriving early can make a night of it with dinner in the West Loop or Fulton Market before the game.
6. Slightly Spooky October at Navy Pier
When: Saturday, Oct. 17 beginning at 1 p.m.
Where: Navy Pier, 600 E. Grand Ave.
Admission: Free
Navy Pier's Halloween programming begins Saturday with a full afternoon of free activities, art, science experiments, Double Dutch and a community market inside Crystal Gardens.
The movie lineup starts at 5 p.m. with short films, followed by Hotel Transylvania at 5:30 p.m. and Beetlejuice at 8 p.m.
Because the activities and movies are indoors, this is also one of the stronger backup plans if October weather changes your outdoor itinerary.
7. Spooktacular Halloween Stroll at Cosley Zoo
When: Friday, Oct. 16, 5:15-7:45 p.m.
Where: Cosley Zoo, 1356 N. Gary Ave., Wheaton
Admission: $12.95 per person; ages 0-1 free with a required ticket
Friday night is the time to visit Cosley Zoo.
The Spooktacular Halloween Stroll transforms the zoo into a family-friendly evening with seasonal decorations, activities, costumes and a pumpkin to decorate at the zoo or take home.
It is a good option for families that want Halloween atmosphere without a particularly scary experience. The event is primarily outdoors, so dress for an October evening.
8. Memorial Park After Dark
When: Saturday, Oct. 17, 5-8:30 p.m.
Where: Memorial Park, 225 Karlskoga Ave., Wheaton
Admission: 21+; $25 advance general admission, $30 day-of, plus fees
Memorial Park After Dark official page
Wheaton is doing fall differently Saturday night.
Memorial Park After Dark turns the downtown park into a lantern-lit evening with live entertainment, interactive activities, food vendors, local legends and a separate Spirit Trail bourbon tasting.
Advance general admission is $25 through Oct. 16 and rises to $30 on event day. Tickets including the bourbon tasting are $65 in advance and $80 on Oct. 17, plus processing fees.
This one is specifically for adults, making it a useful alternative to the many family-oriented Halloween events filling the calendar.
9. DuPage Symphony Orchestra: Brahms and Beyond
When: Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville
Admission: Ticketed
For something completely different, the DuPage Symphony Orchestra opens its 2026-27 season Saturday night at Wentz Concert Hall.
Brahms and Beyond pairs music by contemporary Native American composers Tonya Wind Singer and Brent Michael Davids with works by Edward MacDowell and Curt Cacioppo. Pianist Jonathan Mamora then joins the orchestra for Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2.
Wentz is only a few blocks from Downtown Naperville, so this is an easy dinner-and-concert night without leaving the western suburbs.
10. Harvest Soup & Chili Stroll in Downtown Naperville
When: Sunday, Oct. 18, noon-4 p.m.
Where: Participating businesses throughout Downtown Naperville
Admission: Ticketed
If Sunday calls for something slower, finish the weekend walking through Downtown Naperville with soup and chili.
The Harvest Soup & Chili Stroll runs from noon to 4 p.m., with visitors following a self-guided route through participating downtown shops and restaurants while sampling seasonal soups and chilis.
It is also a good excuse to explore Downtown Naperville beyond one restaurant or store. Add a walk along the Riverwalk before or after the event and you have an easy fall afternoon without much planning.
A Weekend That Shows Two Very Different Sides of Chicagoland
What makes October 16-18 especially good is the range.
In Chicago, you can walk through buildings normally closed to the public, watch international films, see State Street become an arts festival, catch a Blackhawks game or take the kids trick-or-treating at the zoo.
In DuPage, the same weekend can mean Downtown Wheaton after dark, a Halloween zoo stroll, classical music in Naperville or an afternoon built around local restaurants.
That contrast is also part of what makes living in Chicagoland interesting. A Downtown Chicago condo, a West Loop loft and a home in Naperville or Wheaton can offer completely different lifestyles while keeping all of these experiences within reach.
Event schedules, admission and availability can change, especially for ticketed programs. Check the official event page before leaving home.
Exploring Chicago or the Western Suburbs?
Weekend events are one of the easiest ways to experience a community beyond listing photos.
Spend a few hours walking South Loop, West Loop, Pilsen, Wheaton or Naperville, and you begin noticing the everyday details that matter when choosing where to live: restaurants, parks, transit, street activity, community events and how much there is to do close to home.
