Illinois State Fair 2026 Runs Through Aug. 23: Here’s What to Know

SPRINGFIELD— One of Illinois' biggest late-summer traditions is back, and this year's Illinois State Fair is adding a milestone celebration to the usual mix of concerts, carnival rides, agriculture, fair food and the famous Butter Cow.

The 2026 Illinois State Fair runs August 13 through August 23, with the fairgrounds open daily from 7 a.m. to midnight. This year's theme, "Miles of Smiles," celebrates the 100th anniversary of historic Route 66, which was established in 1926 and begins in Chicago before heading west across the country.

Route 66 Takes Center Stage for Its 100th Anniversary

The fairgrounds sit directly along historic Route 66, making the centennial a major part of this year's programming.

Inside Gate 2, the Route 66 Experience offers a self-guided look at the 92 Illinois communities along the Mother Road, complete with vintage billboards, a drive-in movie theater display, neon signs, roadside-inspired attractions and photo opportunities.

The Miles of Smiles Car Show also runs throughout the fair, with different clubs bringing classic and modern vehicles to the grounds. This weekend includes the Central Illinois Mustangs on Friday, August 14, Route 66 Cruisers on Saturday, August 15, and No Limits Car Club on Sunday, August 16.

"Illinois is the birthplace of this iconic highway and ours is the only fairgrounds in the nation to sit on Route 66," Illinois Department of Agriculture Director Jerry Costello II said ahead of the fair.

Bailey Zimmerman, Lainey Wilson and Matchbox Twenty Lead Opening Weekend

The Grandstand lineup starts strong this weekend with three major headliners.

  • Friday, August 14: Bailey Zimmerman with Jake Worthington

  • Saturday, August 15: Lainey Wilson with Tigirlily Gold

  • Sunday, August 16: Matchbox Twenty with Grace Enger

All three concerts are scheduled for 8 p.m. Grandstand admission is separate from general fair admission, and the Illinois State Fair identifies Ticketmaster as its only authorized online ticket seller.

The music does not stop at the paid Grandstand shows. The Grand Central Stage offers free entertainment, including Mike Tramp of White Lion on Friday, The Sweet on Saturday, and rising country duo Lakeview on Sunday, all scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Come Hungry: More Than 120 Food Vendors Are on the Grounds

The Illinois State Fair reports more than 120 food vendors for 2026, mixing traditional fair favorites with new options.

New vendors include Backdraft BBQ, serving smoked brisket, pork shoulder, ribs and brisket nachos, along with Erma's Cinnamon Rolls and additional newcomers spread across the fairgrounds. The fair is also promoting $5 "Small Plates, Big Taste" selections at the Reisch Pavilion.

Visitors can also look for entries in Golden Abe's Fantastic Fair Food Contest, which recognizes standout sweet, savory, beverage and newcomer creations while allowing fairgoers to vote for a People's Choice winner.

Beyond food and music, Conservation World has its own weekend lineup, including the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show, rock climbing, wildlife exhibits and multiple daily performances from Chris Camp, "The Whip Guy," August 14 through 16.

How Much Does the Illinois State Fair Cost in 2026?
