Milwaukee Avenue Goes Car-Free Again for 3 Sundays in Wicker Park
CHICAGO—One of Wicker Park's busiest streets is about to look very different this Sunday.
On August 30, Milwaukee Avenue between the North/Damen intersection and Ashland Avenue will close to cars and buses for the return of Meet Me On Milwaukee, a pedestrian-focused event that replaces normal traffic with walking, biking, sidewalk shopping, outdoor dining, live music, exercise classes and neighborhood pop-ups.
The street will go car-free again on the last Sunday of September and October, giving Chicago three opportunities this fall to experience one of Wicker Park's main commercial corridors without normal vehicle traffic.
Meet Me On Milwaukee 2026 Dates
The 2026 schedule is:
Sunday, August 30: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday, September 27: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday, October 25: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The event is free and does not require registration.
The Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce is coordinating participating businesses along the route, with additional pop-ups planned from nearby commercial corridors including North Avenue, Damen Avenue, Division Street, Ashland Avenue, Armitage Avenue and Western Avenue.
This Is Not a Traditional Chicago Street Festival
Meet Me On Milwaukee is officially described as a pedestrianization pilot, not a conventional street festival.
There are no giant festival gates or requirement to buy admission. Instead, existing neighborhood businesses spill activity into the street and sidewalks while residents and visitors are encouraged to walk or bike through a section of Milwaukee Avenue normally dominated by moving cars, buses and parking.
Organizers say visitors can expect:
Sidewalk sales
Live acoustic music
Outdoor dining
Exercise and wellness activities
Local business pop-ups
Space for walking and biking
Open containers are not permitted, another difference from many Chicago street festivals.
Why Chicago Is Bringing It Back
The first Meet Me On Milwaukee series launched in 2025 as a collaboration between Ald. Daniel La Spata's 1st Ward office, the Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce and the Chicago Department of Transportation.
The idea was straightforward: temporarily remove vehicles and see what happens when Milwaukee Avenue functions primarily as a place for people and neighborhood businesses.
The early results got attention.
Location-data analysis cited following last year's pilot found that foot traffic during the August 2025 event was roughly three times the level recorded on the comparable Sunday a year earlier. September and October activations reportedly drew roughly double the normal foot traffic.
That matters for a corridor where independent restaurants, bookstores, vintage shops, coffee shops and other businesses depend heavily on people walking through the neighborhood.
Ald. La Spata summarized the idea ahead of this year's return as “streets full of people, sidewalks full of commerce.”
Which Part of Milwaukee Avenue Will Close?
The main closure extends along Milwaukee Avenue from the North/Damen intersection southeast to Ashland Avenue.
Several connecting streets will also be partially closed:
N. Honore Street: southwest to the train tracks and northeast to the alley
W. Evergreen Avenue: southwest to the train tracks
N. Wolcott Avenue: southwest to the tracks and northeast to W. Beach Avenue
N. Wood Street: southwest to the alley
N. Hermitage Avenue: southwest to the alley
N. Paulina Street: southwest to the alley and north to the alley
That creates a continuous pedestrian zone through one of the busiest parts of Wicker Park, including the stretch surrounding the Damen Blue Line station.

The August event already has a broad mix of neighborhood businesses scheduled to participate.

The list can continue changing as additional businesses join, so visitors should check the official Meet Me On Milwaukee event page before heading out.
The Chamber is also allowing eligible restaurants and food businesses without permanent sidewalk cafe licenses to operate temporary sidewalk service during the event, helping turn the corridor into more of an open-air dining district for the day.
The #56 Milwaukee Bus Will Be Rerouted
Closing Milwaukee Avenue to vehicles means transit service will change.
The CTA #56 Milwaukee bus will be rerouted during Sunday's event. CTA currently lists a temporary reroute affecting the route on August 30, while the Blue Line will operate normally through the neighborhood.
For many visitors, the Damen Blue Line station will be the easiest way to arrive because it sits directly at the northwestern end of the car-free zone.
Anyone planning to use the #56 should check current CTA alerts before leaving.
Drivers Need to Move Their Cars Before Sunday
The event affects parking before the street actually fills with pedestrians.
A No Parking/Tow Zone begins at 12:01 a.m. Sunday along the affected portion of Milwaukee Avenue.
Cars remaining inside the posted closure area after the restriction begins can be towed. Streets and Sanitation is expected to post temporary signs ahead of each activation showing the affected hours and locations.
Residents who normally park along Milwaukee or one of the affected side streets should check signs carefully Saturday night.
Pair It With the Wicker Park Farmers Market
There is another reason Sunday could be especially busy around the neighborhood.
The Wicker Park Farmers Market is also scheduled for August 30, with its regular Sunday programming at Wicker Park.
The Chamber's calendar also lists free yoga and other family-oriented programming around the market that morning.
That makes it possible to start around the park in the morning, then walk toward Damen and spend the rest of the day exploring car-free Milwaukee Avenue.
