What If Your Town Doesn’t Set Official Hours?
Some communities deliberately leave trick-or-treat timing up to individual neighborhoods and families.
That includes:
Naperville
Darien
Downers Grove
Hinsdale
Des Plaines
In those communities, daylight hours are generally preferred for younger trick-or-treaters.
Porch lights are also one of the easiest ways to know whether a household is participating. If the outside lights are off, it is usually best to move on to the next home.
A Few Halloween Safety Reminders
Halloween falling on a Saturday means neighborhoods could be especially active this year.
Families heading out after sunset should consider flashlights, glow sticks or reflective elements on costumes. Use sidewalks where available, cross at intersections and keep masks or accessories from blocking visibility.
Drivers should also expect heavier pedestrian traffic throughout residential neighborhoods, particularly between 3 and 8 p.m.
And before heading to another suburb specifically to trick-or-treat, double-check that community's current guidance in case hours change.
Halloween Can Show You a Different Side of a Neighborhood
For buyers considering a move, Halloween offers a surprisingly useful glimpse into what a community feels like outside of a home showing.
Spend an evening walking through Elmhurst, Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Lombard, Naperville, Oak Park or Park Ridge, and you begin noticing details that are difficult to see from listing photos.
Which blocks have sidewalks?
How close are homes to one another?
Are people walking between streets?
Do neighbors gather outside?
Are parks and downtown areas nearby?
Those everyday details can matter just as much as square footage when deciding where you want to live.
