Construction Begins on Logan Square’s Megamall Plaza
CHICAGO - Construction has officially started on a new public plaza at the former Megamall site in Logan Square, adding another major public-space improvement near one of the neighborhood’s busiest intersections.
The plaza is planned for 2550 N. Milwaukee Avenue, near Milwaukee Avenue and Logan Boulevard, close to Andros Taverna and La Boulangerie. The project will bring outdoor seating, lighting, trees, landscaping, a performance space, and a children’s play area to a portion of the former Megamall property.
The space is tentatively being called the Logan Square Megamall Plaza, and officials hope it will complement the recently updated traffic circle and nearby public spaces around the square.
A New Public Space for Logan Square
Ald. Anthony Quezada of the 35th Ward described the goal of the plaza as creating “a welcoming public space that supports local economic development and provides opportunities for community gathering and events.”
That vision fits with the larger transformation already happening around Logan Square. Recent improvements near the traffic circle have added more pedestrian space, new gathering areas, outdoor seating opportunities, and a stronger connection between local businesses and public life.
For nearby restaurants, shops, vendors, and residents, the plaza could help bring more foot traffic and visibility to a stretch of Milwaukee Avenue that already plays a major role in the neighborhood’s identity.
What Is Being Built
The plaza will include a mix of everyday and event-focused features.
Plans call for seating, new lighting, trees, landscaping, a performance area, and a children’s play space. The idea is to create a flexible public space that can support casual use during the day while also giving the neighborhood room for small events and community programming.
Work at the site follows final pre-construction logistics, including utility coordination by the Chicago Department of Transportation. A bulldozer is now on the fenced-off property, and construction activity is underway.
The patio area previously used by La Boulangerie on city land has also been removed so plaza work can move forward.
Construction Timeline and Site Changes
The city fenced off the site in June for pre-construction work. Construction is now underway, and the project could be finished by early next year, though officials are expected to share updated timelines as work progresses.
The fenced-off property had also been the site of a small homeless encampment for a little over a year. When the city prepared the site for construction, a small number of people living there were forced to relocate, with some moving to other parts of the neighborhood, including the public plaza area near the Comfort Station.
Quezada said his office has been working with the Department of Family and Support Services and outreach teams to connect people at the site with shelter opportunities, case management, healthcare services, and other resources.
Why This Matters for Logan Square
Construction on Logan Square’s Megamall Plaza marks another important step in the neighborhood’s public-space evolution.
The project will bring seating, landscaping, lighting, a performance space, and a children’s play area to 2550 N. Milwaukee Avenue, helping activate part of the former Megamall site near Logan Boulevard.
With work now underway and completion possible by early next year, the plaza could become a meaningful new gathering place for residents, businesses, families, and visitors in one of Chicago’s most recognizable neighborhood centers.
