CHICAGO—Labor Day may be over, but Chicago's September festival calendar is only getting busier.
This weekend, September 11-13, brings one of the city's biggest Mexican Independence Day celebrations, the return of German-American Oktoberfest, hundreds of artists and makers across Wicker Park and Ravenswood, and the 41st annual Printers Row Lit Fest.
DuPage County also has several destination-worthy events, including an Indian cultural festival in Naperville, a new artisan market at The Morton Arboretum and a weekend arts festival in Warrenville.
Here are 10 of the best things to do in Chicago and DuPage County this weekend.
1. El Grito Chicago
Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13 | 2-10 p.m. | Grant Park
One of the biggest events of the weekend takes over Butler Field in Grant Park for two days celebrating Mexican culture and independence.
Expect live local and international music, Mexican food, an artisan mercadito, family activities and cultural programming.
Sunday evening culminates with the El Grito Civic Ceremony, led by the Consul General of Mexico in Chicago, with mariachi, folkloric dance and fireworks.
General admission is ticketed, and current pricing can vary by tier, so check the official event site before heading downtown.
2. 26th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade
Sunday, September 13 | Noon-3 p.m. | Little Village | Free
If you want to experience Mexican Independence Day in one of Chicago's most important Mexican-American neighborhoods, head to Little Village Sunday.
The 55th annual 26th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade begins at the historic Little Village Arch at 26th Street and Albany Avenue and travels west to Kostner Avenue.
This year's theme is “United We Ride, Stronger Than Ever.” The parade includes traditional dancers, mariachi, equestrian groups, community organizations and elaborate floats along the neighborhood's busy commercial corridor.
The event regularly draws huge crowds, and the city is recommending public transportation because of street closures and increased traffic throughout Mexican Independence Day weekend.
3. Chicago German-American Oktoberfest
Friday, September 11 through Sunday, September 13 | Lincoln Square | Free
You do not have to wait until October for Oktoberfest.
Chicago's German-American Oktoberfest returns to Lincoln Square at Western and Lincoln, with authentic German food, beer and wine, traditional music, dancing and family activities.
Festival hours are 5-10 p.m. Friday, noon-10 p.m. Saturday, and noon-10 p.m. Sunday.
Saturday also brings the German-American Steuben Parade at 2 p.m., traveling along Lincoln Avenue from Irving Park Road toward Western Avenue.
If you want the fullest experience, Saturday is probably the best day because you can combine the parade with the festival afterward.
4. Printers Row Lit Fest

Book lovers get one of Chicago's longest-running cultural events this weekend.
The 41st annual Printers Row Lit Fest fills South Dearborn Street between Ida B. Wells Drive and Polk Street with authors, booksellers, publishers, panel discussions and literary programs.
Organizers expect more than 70 live programs, hundreds of authors and more than 100 exhibitors, with programming spread across multiple indoor and outdoor stages.
The entire festival is free, and no tickets are required for general programs, although seating for individual talks is first come, first served.
This year's literary programming also features Patti Smith as the 2026 Harold Washington Literary Award recipient.
5. Ravenswood ArtWalk

If you prefer actually walking into artists' studios rather than browsing a conventional art fair, the Ravenswood ArtWalk is one of the weekend's best choices.
The event stretches along the Ravenswood Industrial Corridor from Lawrence Avenue to Irving Park Road, opening working studios, galleries and creative businesses to visitors.
The outdoor portion includes more than 80 local makers, two stages of live music, food trucks, a beer garden and children's activities.
Admission is free, although organizers encourage donations.
6. Renegade Craft Fair Chicago

Division Street becomes a massive open-air marketplace this weekend when Renegade Craft Fair returns to Wicker Park.
The fall fair stretches along Division Street between Damen and Ashland avenues and features more than 400 independent artists and makers.
Expect handmade jewelry, ceramics, prints, clothing, home goods, art, accessories and other small-batch products.
Because of the size of the market and the surrounding restaurants and shops along Division Street, this is an easy event to turn into a full afternoon in Wicker Park.
7. Swadeshi Mela 2026: Festival of India
Friday, September 11 through Sunday, September 13 | Mall of India, Naperville
One of DuPage County's biggest cultural events this weekend is happening in Naperville.
Swadeshi Mela, the Festival of India, returns for its fourth edition with three days of Indian food, shopping, music, dance, art and cultural programming.
The event takes place at the Mall of India, 776 S. Route 59, with programming scheduled throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Visitors can browse traditional clothing, jewelry, handcrafted items and home décor while sampling Indian street food and regional dishes.
It is a particularly strong option for families looking for something beyond a typical suburban street festival.
8. Naperville Sister Cities International Festival

Downtown Naperville is hosting another international celebration Saturday.
The Naperville Sister Cities International Festival brings music, dance, food and cultural traditions from Naperville's international partner cities and local multicultural communities to Central Park at 104 E. Benton Ave.

9. Firefly Market at The Morton Arboretum

The Morton Arboretum is debuting a new fall market this weekend.
Firefly Market brings together more than 60 makers, artists, bakers and small businesses for an outdoor shopping experience across the Arboretum grounds.
Expect pottery, jewelry, art, candles, specialty foods, home décor and gifts, along with food trucks and drinks.
Saturday tickets include general admission to the Arboretum's 1,700 acres, so visitors can combine the market with hiking and exploring the grounds.

For a more relaxed DuPage weekend option, Art on the Prairie returns to the Warrenville Park District Recreation Center.

Saturday's entertainment includes Rick Lindy & The Wild Ones, while Sunday's lineup includes the Peter Oprisko Quintet, Mike Knauf Band and Banjo Buddies Dixieland Band.
Children's activities include art programming, balloon twisting and face painting, and admission to the festival is free.
