5 Must-See Chicago Theater Shows to Catch in August 2026

CHICAGO—August may be a quieter month for some local theater companies, but Chicago stages still have plenty to offer. This month’s lineup includes a Tony Award-winning musical, a new Chicago drama, inventive close-up magic, current-events-inspired plays, and a South Side production of an American classic.

‘The Outsiders’ Returns to the Cadillac Palace Theatre

The Greasers and the Socs return to Chicago in the touring production of The Outsiders, the musical adapted from S.E. Hinton’s novel and the well-known film directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1967, the story follows Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and their Greaser family as they confront class divisions, violence, friendship, and the search for belonging.

The production won four 2024 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The Chicago engagement has a runtime of approximately 2 hours and 25 minutes, including intermission, and is recommended for ages 10 and older. A limited number of $49 day-of-show rush tickets may be available at the theater box office.

‘52 Lovers’ Brings World-Class Card Magic to Andersonville

Czech magician Ondřej Pšenička returns to the Chicago Magic Lounge with 52 Lovers, a one-man performance combining expert card magic, unusual humor, audience interaction, and inventive sleight of hand.

Pšenička has appeared on Penn & Teller: Fool Us three times, successfully fooling the hosts during each appearance. The evening also includes close-up magic performed at guests’ cabaret tables before the main show.

Performances begin at 7 p.m. each Wednesday. Tickets start at $44 for main-floor seating and $50 for the front row, before processing fees. The Chicago Magic Lounge is primarily a 21-and-older venue, although guests ages 16 and older may attend with a legal guardian.

‘Adolescent Salvation’ Makes Its Chicago Premiere

Playwright Tim Venable’s Adolescent Salvation follows three teenagers over the course of one turbulent night filled with tequila, texting, Taylor Swift, arguments, and increasingly dangerous decisions.

The dark comedy received its initial Los Angeles production before arriving at Theater Wit with a Chicago cast. Rather than presenting adolescence as simple or predictable, the play explores its contradictions, vulnerabilities, and potentially devastating consequences.

Theater Wit advises that the production contains mature material, including discussions or depictions of sexual situations, sexual violence, eating disorders, pedophilia, and death. Theatergoers should review the official content guidance before purchasing tickets.

The Living Newspaper Festival Turns Headlines Into Theater

Jackalope Theatre’s 17th Annual Living Newspaper Festival combines journalism and performance through five original 10-minute plays inspired by recent news coverage.

The festival draws inspiration from the Living Newspapers created through the Federal Theatre Project during the 1930s. This year’s subjects include GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, genetic cloning, UFO reports, public mistrust, and online rumors connected to the Jeffrey Epstein files.

All five short plays are presented together during one approximately 75-minute performance. Tickets range from $20 to $35, with evening shows scheduled Thursday through Saturday and Monday, plus a Sunday matinee.

‘Ragtime’ Comes to the Beverly Arts Center

The Beverly Arts Center closes the month with Ragtime, the sweeping musical by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, adapted from the novel by E.L. Doctorow.

Set during the early 20th century, the story connects the experiences of a wealthy white family, a Black musician and activist, and a Jewish immigrant working to build a new life in America. Their journeys intersect with historical figures including Booker T. Washington, Henry Ford, and Harry Houdini.

The local Beverly production arrives shortly after the latest Broadway revival earned four 2026 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, leading actor and actress honors for Joshua Henry and Caissie Levy, and Best Sound Design of a Musical. The Beverly Arts Center performances are separate from the Broadway production. Tickets are $50 for non-members and $45 for members.
