One of Chicago’s most anticipated cultural landmarks is finally ready to open.

The Obama Presidential Center officially opens to the public on Friday, June 19, 2026, bringing a major new destination to Hyde Park and putting Chicago’s South Side in the national spotlight.

More than a traditional presidential library, the 19-acre campus is designed as a community-focused space centered around leadership, culture, history and public engagement.

And with the opening weekend landing on Juneteenth weekend, the launch is expected to be one of the city’s biggest events of the summer.

The Museum serves as the centerpiece of the campus.

Spread across four floors, exhibits explore:

  • Barack Obama’s presidency

  • Major policy initiatives and challenges

  • The Obama family’s White House years

  • Interactive storytelling and multimedia exhibits

One of the biggest attractions will likely be the full-scale Oval Office replica, where visitors can sit behind the presidential desk.

The Museum also includes the Sky Room, offering panoramic views of Chicago’s South Side, West Side and lakefront.

Visitors will also find more than 20 site-specific art installations from artists around the world throughout the Museum and campus grounds.

The Forum

The two-level Forum is designed as a public gathering and programming space.

It includes:

  • A restaurant from Chicago chef Cliff Rome

  • The Hadiya Pendleton Atrium featuring work from Theaster Gates

  • The Elie Wiesel Auditorium

  • Café and retail space

  • Community event areas

The focus is on education, leadership and neighborhood engagement.

Home Court

The 60,000-square-foot Home Court facility includes an NBA-sized basketball court and programming tied to sports, mentorship and youth development.

The space reflects President Obama’s long-standing emphasis on community involvement through athletics and recreation.

Outdoor Spaces and Campus Features

The lakefront campus also introduces a large amount of new public green space.

Highlights include:

  • John Lewis Plaza

  • A vegetable garden and teaching kitchen

Why This Opening Matters

The Obama Presidential Center is one of the most significant cultural investments Chicago has seen in years. Beyond tourism, the project is expected to reshape parts of the South Side through increased visitors, new infrastructure, and long-term economic activity.

And unlike many presidential libraries, this one was intentionally designed to function as an active community space, not just a historical archive.
