Chicago Just Returned to the Top 10 Best Park Systems in America, and It's the Largest City on the List

CHICAGO, IL — Chicago just earned another national recognition, and this one could matter more than people realize.

The city's park system has officially returned to the Top 10 U.S. park systems in the 2026 Trust for Public Land ParkScore rankings, climbing back to No. 10 nationally after placing 11th in 2025.

The achievement stands out for another reason beyond the ranking itself. Chicago is now the largest city in the country with more than one million residents to make the Top 10 list, reinforcing a quality-of-life advantage that touches nearly every neighborhood throughout the city.

Chicago Climbed Back Into the National Top 10

Chicago earned an overall ParkScore of 74.3 out of 100, narrowly edging out Denver to reclaim a spot among the nation's highest-ranked park systems.

According to the rankings, several factors helped push Chicago back into the Top 10:

Park Equity Score: 99/100
Park Access Score: 98/100
Residents within a 10-minute walk of a park: 98%
Annual park investment: $252 per resident
National average investment: $154 per resident

The city significantly outperformed national averages in both access and investment, two categories that continue to become increasingly important as cities focus on quality-of-life improvements.

Why Chicago Scored So Well

One of the biggest reasons behind the improvement was equitable park access across neighborhoods.

The report found that Chicago provides nearly equal park access across both lower-income and higher-income communities, along with similar access across neighborhoods with different racial demographics.

Chicago also received strong marks for amenities and recreational offerings, including:

• Sports fields
• Playgrounds
• Splashpads and water features
• Beaches and lakefront access
• Community spaces and cultural programming

The city ranked 4th nationally for splashpads and water features, helping families and neighborhoods access recreational spaces throughout Chicago.

One Challenge Still Holding Chicago Back

Despite returning to the Top 10, one category continues to limit Chicago's overall score.

The city's median park size is just 2.2 acres, compared to the national average of 5.4 acres.

Older urban cities frequently face this challenge because available land for large-scale parks becomes increasingly limited over time.

Still, Chicago's broad access network continues to offset that limitation, giving residents one of the strongest park accessibility systems in the country.

Why This Matters Beyond Parks

For residents, buyers, and neighborhoods throughout Chicagoland, rankings like this often extend beyond recreation.

Park access frequently influences walkability, neighborhood appeal, community development, and long-term property values, making quality public spaces an important part of how people choose where to live.

With 98% of Chicago residents living within a 10-minute walk of a park, the ranking highlights one more reason the city continues to stand out nationally.
