Kick off the holiday weekend with a history-focused family outing at Gettysburg Day in Naperville.

The event commemorates the 163rd anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg with hands-on activities, Civil War-era programming, a fashion show, sword-drill demonstrations, and a visit from President Abraham Lincoln inside Naper Settlement’s historic chapel.

Families can also take part in a special fireworks-in-a-jar activity. Admission is included with general museum admission, while select children’s activities may require advance registration.

Friday, July 3, 2026
Begins at 5:30 p.m.
Graf Park, 1855 Manchester Road, Wheaton

Wheaton is starting the holiday early with one of the strongest family-friendly options in DuPage County.

The celebration at Graf Park begins at 5:30 p.m. with games, music, giveaways, and local festivities. The night ends with both a fireworks show and drone display after dark.

It is a great choice for families who want to celebrate before July 4 and keep Saturday open for a parade, cookout, or another fireworks event.

Live music begins at 5:30 p.m.
Fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

Lisle’s Independence Day celebration combines live music with one of the region’s earlier fireworks displays.

The evening starts with performances at the Van Kampen Stage, including Alt 101 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and Mike & Joe from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Fireworks follow at 9:30 p.m. as part of the community’s extended America 250 celebration.

The Cubs host the St. Louis Cardinals all weekend at Wrigley Field, giving baseball fans three chances to spend part of the holiday in Wrigleyville.

This is one of Chicago’s most beloved July 4 traditions and a great way to start the day before heading to the lakefront or a backyard barbecue.

7:30 p.m.
Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Millennium Park

The Grant Park Orchestra returns to the Jay Pritzker Pavilion for its annual Independence Day Salute, one of Chicago’s most recognizable free summer music traditions.

The family-friendly concert includes patriotic favorites, classical selections, and familiar American music performed outdoors in Millennium Park. Free seating is available on a first-come basis, while reserved seating options are also offered.

This is an excellent choice for anyone who wants a more relaxed downtown holiday plan before fireworks begin later in the night.

For the biggest skyline fireworks experience in Chicago, head to Navy Pier.

This year’s Independence Day show is expected to be the Pier’s largest and longest yet, with a 15-minute fireworks display choreographed to music in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary.

The show is free to watch, but Navy Pier and the surrounding lakefront will be extremely busy. Arrive early, expect security checks and heavy traffic, and consider public transportation rather than driving downtown.

Frontier Sports Complex, 3380 Cedar Glade Drive, Naperville

Naperville’s annual community fireworks show returns to Frontier Sports Complex on Saturday evening.

Before the fireworks, the Naperville Municipal Band performs a patriotic concert at 7:30 p.m. at the Wagner Pavilion near the 95th Street Community Plaza. The fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m.

Admission and parking are free, but this is one of DuPage County’s most popular holiday displays. Guests can begin gathering after 5 p.m., and arriving early is highly recommended.

Liberty Franks at Cosley Zoo

Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5, 2026
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cosley Zoo, 1356 N. Gary Ave., Wheaton

For a simple family outing on Saturday or Sunday, stop by Cosley Zoo in Wheaton for its America 250 food special.

Visitors can purchase a Liberty Frank hot dog for $2.50 from the zoo concession stand in recognition of the country’s 250th anniversary. Regular zoo admission applies, but it is an easy add-on for families looking for a lower-key daytime activity after the bigger fireworks and parade events.

Plan Before You Go

Fourth of July weekend is one of the busiest travel weekends of the summer, especially near downtown Chicago, Wrigleyville, Navy Pier, Millennium Park, Naperville, and major suburban parks.

For fireworks events, arrive early, bring water, confirm parking plans before leaving, and consider public transportation when possible. Outdoor events may also change due to weather, so check the official event page or social media account before heading out.
