CHICAGO — South Side transit riders are getting a noticeable service boost this month. Starting June 15, 2026, the Metra Electric Line will roll out a new schedule with more frequent trains through Hyde Park, added stops across parts of the South Side, and expanded service on the South Chicago and Blue Island branches.

The changes are designed to make the line more useful for daily riders, especially those traveling between Millennium Station, Hyde Park, the University of Chicago, South Side neighborhoods, and the south suburbs. Metra said the new schedule will increase service to multiple stops beginning June 15.

What Changes on June 15?

The biggest update is in Hyde Park, where weekday service will become more consistent.

All weekday inbound trains to Millennium Station will stop at:

  • 51st/53rd Street

  • 55th-56th-57th Street

  • 59th/University of Chicago

Midday trains will stop at those Hyde Park stations every 20 minutes on average in both directions, giving riders more flexibility throughout the day. Outbound express trains to University Park will also begin stopping at 55th, 56th, and 57th Street.

South Chicago and Blue Island Branches Will Also See More Service

The service boost is not limited to Hyde Park.

On the South Chicago branch, Metra will extend evening inbound service by about two hours and morning outbound service by about 40 minutes.

The Blue Island branch will also see more frequent midday service, with trains arriving hourly or better. Midday local trains that previously served stations between Kensington/115th Street and Millennium Station will now also serve the Blue Island branch.

Metra will also add stops for some trains at 79th/Chatham, 87th/Woodruff, and 103rd/Rosemoor on weekdays and weekends.

Why This Matters for the South Side

More frequent Metra Electric service could make a meaningful difference for South Side residents, commuters, students, and workers.

The expanded schedule improves access to major destinations like Downtown Chicago, Hyde Park, the University of Chicago, and future South Side anchors such as the Obama Presidential Center. Gov. JB Pritzker said the expanded schedule will provide “more dependable transportation options for the South Side and south suburbs” while better connecting riders to jobs, neighborhoods, and destinations.

For neighborhoods along the line, better frequency can also make Metra feel less like a traditional commuter rail service and more like a practical everyday transit option.

Part of a Larger Regional Transit Shift

The changes come as Chicago-area transit is entering a larger restructuring period.

The law creating the Northern Illinois Transit Authority recently went into effect, with the new agency set to fully replace the Regional Transportation Authority on September 1, 2026. A quarter-percent sales tax increase to support regional transit is also scheduled to begin on August 1, 2026.

Metra has also recently increased service on the Rock Island Line, including additional weekday and weekend trips, showing a broader push toward improving regional rail service across the Chicago area.

What Riders Should Know

The new Metra Electric Line schedule begins June 15, 2026.

Riders should check the full updated schedule before traveling, especially if they use the Hyde Park, South Chicago, Blue Island, Chatham, Woodruff, or Rosemoor stations.

For many South Side riders, the takeaway is simple: more trains, better midday frequency, and stronger connections between neighborhoods and downtown.
